about

The Waybacks have been following Tinariwen for a while now—we’re fans. When we heard they were playing in Winston-Salem at a venue we know and love, we were excited! When we heard they’d received threats and hateful comments, we wanted to show our support. We believe no one should be treated like that in America, no matter where they’re from, or what they look like. Especially a group of phenomenal musicians like Tinariwen, who travel the world spreading a message of hope and love, courage and unity, freedom and dignity.

We wanted to reach out and do our small part to give Tinariwen a proper welcome back to our country. We were proud to perform one of their songs on our last tour, and proud to hear some other artists were inspired to do the same!

Of course, none of us speaks Tamashek, so learning a lyrical song was a challenge. We did our best to translate the message of Tinariwen's song into English, based on available translations, and what we know about the band and their history. I hope Tinariwen takes our adaptation of their song as a sign of respect and admiration. We learned a lot from them just by taking this on.
